Tokyo/Ogasawara: The Last Day

Another photographic bombardment of love and peace. My heart has grown so big and receptive during these past months. I am so thankful for my island community- I will see you again soon- mata ne!

My favorite friend- we make each other laugh and laugh and laugh. She is a gift from the universe.

A fleet of 12 small fishing and touring boats followed in Ogasawaramaru’s wake, cheering us on. A bunch of islanders jumped joyously off the boats into the chilly winter waters, yelping and waving us off. Sanae snapped these shots from her little boat and sent them to me later. I did a little jig on the big boat and she did the same on her boat- we danced together. 🙂

The ship recedes into the distance- the beginning of an arduous 25 hour trip from Chichijima, Ogasawara to Takeshiba Harbor in Tokyo. It still amazes me that the Ogasawara Archipelago is technically a part of Tokyo prefecture, despite the sizeable distance.

Extremely happy and at peace.

The ocean was quiet today so ride wasn’t too rocky. A family of dolphins leaped in the ship’s wake, inviting us to come again, and a group of flying fish leaped starboard.

Shoko and Satomi are vacationing on the mainland and Hawaii, respectively.

Munching on kaki-no-tane, ume-flavored seaweed roots, gulping fizzy beer, and giggling as the ocean flies by.

We arrive in Tokyo and go out separate ways. I bump into Ami and we exchange emails. I spontaneously message Nozomi, an English student who I’ve met a handful of times and we meet up for dinner, dessert, and a city night stroll. This is a panoramic of the famous Shibuya crossing, my second encounter.

A Harajuku shop endorsed by Lady Gaga herself. The shopkeeper’s head blocks a small sign that says “No Photo”. Whoops.

Very sexy orange haired stylish dude in Shibuya with ripped jeans and a bored expression- had to stop and ask for his photograph.

Nozomi and I grin in front of Takeshita Dori in Harajuku, full of shops and creperies.

Fancy Italian dinner with Nozomi ft. pizza, bacon pasta, blood orange juice, and excited chatter.

The undying loyalty of Hachiko immortalized in bronze and surrounded by sakura trees in bloom. This is a famous site for lovers and friends to meet and reconcile.

I’m so tall!

Unforgettable ice cream sundaes. Nozomi really loves strawberries and her sundae features a sizeable flan.

Nozomi walks me to my train and waves me goodbye. She loves to travel and has been to more countries than I can count. She has promised to visit Portland for two weeks in the near future and do a home stay with me.
